Science in the Autumn
This year at Nansen School we will be giving a higher focus to our Science, Lessons will continue to be set into context with a practical activity or application wherever possible. We will be assessing pupil progress against National standards on a regular basis to ensure that your child continues to achieve.
Year 2 are working on the topic of “Healthy and Growth ” They will be taught what the different of different types of foods are and which ones will keep them healthy. This will help them to make wise choices when eating. Pupils will even plan what they would put into their picnic boxes. They will learn how to keep their bodies healthy by exercising carefully. For their investigation they will measure how their bodies change before and after exercise. Finally we will guide them how to keep safe from medicines and drugs in the home.
Year 3 are working on the topic “Teeth and Eating”. They will research the different types of food groups and decide which foods enable them to grow healthy bones and teeth. They will focus on the care of teeth by healthy eating. For their investigation they will try and stop a tooth from decaying with fizzy drinks. They will then examine the teeth of other animals to observe how they have adapted to their diet.
Year 4 are working on the topic “ Keeping Warm“. They will be taught how to use and read a thermometer. They will then compare how heat moves through different materials and predict their behaviour from their properties. For their investigation they will and select the most appropriate one for keeping things warm by conducting trials. Pupils will be using data loggers to measure the temperature change over a period of time and to construct graphs.
Year 5 Will be working on the topic “ Keeping Healthy” They will look at what makes up a varied diet which will enable someone to grow and keep healthy. They will research food groups and find out what they do for the body. As a result of this they should be able to select a sensible diet which is varied and balanced. They will also look at the effect of exercise on the body. They will use data loggers to measure the changes in the heart rate with exercise. For their investigation they will look for patterns in their resting pulse rate. Finally we will look at the dangers of drugs, smoking and alcohol to the body.
Year 6 will explore how living things adapt and depend upon each other. They will explore how plants will grow with different nutrients. Plant and animals will be identified using keys leading on to pupils studying the relationship between them. The structure of the soil will be part of their investigation. They will be required to collect evidence and use it to explain how certain plants grow well .
As a Parent, Volunteer or Friend of our School , I hope that you feel that you too can take part in our Science session.
