Mental Health and Wellbeing

Our vision is to develop a school community where children can enjoy a welcoming, secure, happy and healthy environment, where all members can develop self-confidence, self-esteem, self-motivation, independence, compassion, tolerance and understanding of others.
At Nansen Primary School we support the emotional health and wellbeing of our pupils and staff. We have a supportive and caring ethos model of respect and kindness, where each individual is valued.
At our school we know that everyone experiences life challenges that can make us vulnerable and at times, anyone may need additional emotional support. We take the view that positive mental health is everybody’s business and that we all have a role to play.
We promote a mentally healthy environment through:-
- Promoting our school values and encouraging a sense of belonging
- Promoting pupil voice and opportunities to participate in decision-making
- Celebrating academic and non-academic achievements
- Providing opportunities to develop a sense of worth through taking responsibility for themselves and others
- Providing opportunities to reflect
- Access to appropriate support that meets their needs.
Adults as well as children need to look after their emotional wellbeing. Please find activities as below for families to complete together.
Positive Mental Wellbeing
Promotion of positive mental well being
The school offers pupils many opportunities to do physical and relaxing activities to promote positive well being:-
- Dinner time games to play outside
- Library open each lunch to borrow books to read
- Home Learning Projects
- Themed Days
- Charity Days
- Summer and Christmas Fairs
- Residential visits
- Educational day visits
- After school clubs
The school likes to celebrate the many successes that are children achieve:-
- Twitter each school day to celebrate what is taking place.
- Good to be Green all day
- Displaying pupil’s work
- Achievement Award Assembly each week
- Half term Head Teacher Award

- Weekly school newsletter to celebrate what has taken place
Teaching about Mental Health and Wellbeing
The school follows the DfE guidelines for the teaching of Mental Health and Wellbeing in the following ways:-
- Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE) scheme of work
- Assemblies and theme days.
Assessment Process of Pupil Wellbeing
- The school uses the Pyramid of Need to identify the need of wellbeing in our pupils.
- All pupils complete the Signs of Safety and Well Being 3 Houses sheet
- House of Good Things
- House of Dreams
- House of Worries.
- Staff RAG rate their pupils:-
- Red - will have specific support from the Inclusion Team and/or outside agencies such as:-
- Standing Ovation
- Forward Thinking Birmingham
- Well Being Crew
- School Educational Psychologist
- School Nurse
- Family Support Worker
- Amber - staff may provide short term intervention within a group from a member of the Inclusion Team .
- Green - continue to have quality first teaching of the curriculum described above.
Interventions to support mental wellbeing
Staff from the Inclusion Team and outside agencies provide appropriate interventions for pupils mental health and wellbeing:-
- Draw and Talk Therapy
- FRIENDs Resilience training
- Self-esteem individual and group activities
- Bereavement Counselling
- Lego therapy
