Road Safety

Road Safety

Every year over 130 children die and more than 4500 are seriously injured whilst walking or cycling on UK roads. More than double those that die in car crashes.

Children need to learn to use the roads safely, to walk and cycle in safety and also use their common sense when crossing a road or getting into a car. Road safety is essential for children’s freedom, development and exercise.

Be Safe Be Seen

As Autumn arrives it not only gets darker but more vital that children are seen. Please make sure that your child has a coat or bag that has reflective strips to allow them to be seen in the headlights of cars especially if they cycle to school.

Please Drive and Park Safely

The start and end of the school day is always a a busy time – especially with 630 pupils attending our school.

If you are coming to school by car please remember to park safely and legally. Parking or stopping in the middle of the road or on the pavement is dangerous for pupils and parents and often there is not enough space to walk past the cars.

Always wear your seatbelt, no matter how long or short your journey is. If the driver is going too fast (especially if above the speed limit), ask them to slow down! Do not distract the driver.

Always use a car seat/booster seat and keep children in the back seat.

Please take care not to block the driveways of the local residents.

Get your child out of the car on the pavement side.

Please make sure it is safe to open the car doors – open them on the pavement side not the side of the road.

It is illegal to use your mobile phone whilst driving – it puts you, your family at risk.

Don’t be distracted by your mobile phone or music device when walking or driving.

Families on Foot

Road safety should be taught by example and guidance with a trusted adult, from an early age.

There are lots of things you can do to help keep yourself safe. Here are some of the main points that will help you:

Always hold your child’s hand when crossing the road.

Think about using safe crossing places such as pelican crossings.

Always stop, look and listen and think before crossing a road.

Never cross if you are not sure it is safe.

Ensure your child wears a cycle helmet when on your bike and try to make them visible by wearing something bright – even in the summer.
